Akamai expands cloud network with 7 new regions

MASSACHUSETTS, UNITED STATES — Akamai Technologies, a global cloud services provider, recently announced a major expansion of its decentralized cloud platform, adding seven new core compute regions in key markets across Europe, Asia, North America, and Latin America.
The new regions in Amsterdam, Jakarta, Los Angeles, Miami, Milan, Osaka, and São Paulo represent Akamai’s continued investment in a distributed cloud architecture. According to the company, this approach improves performance, resiliency, and data sovereignty compared to centralized hyperscale cloud providers.
With the addition of the new regions, Akamai now operates over 40 cloud regions worldwide.
The company has opened 13 new regions since acquiring Linode, a pioneer in edge cloud computing, in 2022. The expansions into Miami and São Paulo mark Akamai’s first foray into Latin America’s rapidly growing cloud market.
“The need for companies to provide a better user experience increasingly exposes the limits of the legacy centralized cloud model,” said Adam Karon, Akamai’s chief operating officer and Cloud Technology Group general manager.
“With Akamai Connected Cloud, we’re taking an outside-in, distributed-first approach built on a commitment to cloud-native technologies and the same network many of the world’s largest companies have relied on for more than two decades.”
Akamai plans to open additional regions in 2023 to support surging demand for edge computing services across industries like media, retail, and gaming.
