79% of Americans fear AI will cut salaries
CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Around 79% of American employees fear potential pay cuts with the increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in their workplaces.
According to a study conducted by survey platform Pollfish and commissioned by employment screening service Checkr, Millennials as the most anxious group, with 82% expressing concerns about AI impacting their earnings.
Gen Z showed a similar level of unease, with 76% sharing these sentiments.
Alarmingly, 74% of respondents believed they could lose their jobs entirely due to AI-induced automation, with layoffs predicted to start within six months to two years from now.
Despite these concerns, 86% were willing to accept a pay cut if AI simplifying their jobs was the trade-off. Millennials, Gen Xers, and Boomers are willing to take a pay cut of 10%, while Gen Zers said they’d give up 15% of their pay to work less.
Meanwhile, over half of the survey’s participants were open to AI adoption if it facilitated a transition to a four-day workweek.
Overall, while the perception of AI remains varied, most respondents have short-term concerns about its widespread implementation.
Pollfish and Checkr’s survey recorded the response of 3,000 employed American workers between April 27 and 28, 2023. An equal number of Boomers, Gen Xers, Millennials, and Gen Z participated in the report.
