BPO firm faces lawsuit for Davao mall fire

Business process outsourcing firm Survey Sampling International (SSI), now named Dynata, is facing a lawsuit for the deaths of 29 call center agents caused by a fire at the New City Commercial Center (NCCC) in Davao City on December 23, 2017.
The case is reportedly filed against chief executive officer and president Christopher Mark Fanning and director and shareholder David Ian Weatherseed of SSI Philippines, the company’s affiliate in the country. Donald Nolan and Thomas Routh of Chicago-based Nolan Law Group and James Sullivan of Connecticut firm Howard, Kohn, Sprague & Fitzgerald are said to have filed the case at the Hartford Superior Court on December 20.
According to the lawyers, the two executives had a role in the tragedy by ignoring fire safety in their office at the NCCC, endangering the lives of their workers in the process. Nolan said corporate executives only see numbers and output, bypassing ethics and basic human care.
