Fiji’s BPO sector grows to $140 million

Fiji’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry is now worth $140 million and currently employs over 7,000 individuals, according to Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Minister for Economy, Civil Service, and Communications.
During a parliamentary meeting, Sayed-Khaiyum said that about 3,000 employees were added to the sector over the past two years despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
The minister stated that there is an “enormous potential” for the industry to grow further and open up to 100,000 job opportunities in the next decade.
Sayed-Khaiyum attributed this feat to the huge investments and the “liberalization of the telecommunications sector in Fiji.”
He added that the country’s time zone — 12 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time — their ability to speak English, and the cost of telecommunications made Fiji an attractive BPO destination.
Sayed-Khaiyum noted that “the FCCC (Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission) has done a lot of good work in that [outsourcing] space…”
