ICON to create 1,000 new BPO jobs in Jamaica
WESTMORELAND, JAMAICA — ICON Importers and Distributors, a Jamaican company with over 25 years of service, announced a transformative investment in the Global Services Sector (GSS), previously known as business process outsourcing (BPO). The initiative will turn Paradise, Westmoreland, into a vibrant commercial hub, creating approximately 1,000 jobs over the next two years.
Led by CEO Moses Chybar, ICON is set to construct a state-of-the-art BPO facility at its Paradise location. Construction is scheduled to begin by late 2025, with operations expected to start by mid-2027. While the company has not disclosed the financial details of the project, it is part of ICON’s strategic plan to contribute significantly to Jamaica’s economic growth.
“As part of ICON Importers and Distributors’ strategic growth plan, we are excited to announce our intention to construct a modern facility at our Paradise location to house a business process outsourcing company,” Chybar said.
State-of-the-art BPO facility planned by 2027
The new facility will accommodate approximately 1,000 employees and is expected to generate far-reaching economic benefits. Beyond direct employment, the project will stimulate growth in sectors such as transportation, healthcare, education, hospitality, and retail.
“This project is a significant step in our commitment to contributing to economic growth and development within Westmoreland and Jamaica as a whole,” Chybar told The Gleaner.
Strategic partnerships to drive BPO operations
ICON plans to partner with experienced operators in the BPO industry to manage the facility effectively. “While ICON will not directly manage the BPO operations, we plan to partner with a reliable and experienced operator to utilize the space effectively,” Chybar explained.
The company’s commitment extends beyond job creation. “We believe this development will not only stimulate economic activity but also foster community growth by enhancing access to resources, services, and opportunities for residents,” Chybar added.
Jamaica’s GSS sector: A growing economic powerhouse
Jamaica’s GSS sector has seen remarkable growth in recent years. Employment in the sector rose from 32,000 in 2016 to approximately 52,000 by 2024—a 61.5% increase over eight years—contributing over US$900 million annually to the economy.
ICON’s investment aligns with this upward trend and underscores its vision for sustainable development in Westmoreland.
With its focus on community upliftment and economic sustainability, ICON’s new venture promises to be a game-changer for both Westmoreland and Jamaica’s broader economy.
