Meralco to invest P140Mn to PLDT’s data center
Electric power distributor Meralco is looking to invest P140 million (US$2.7 million) for a custom-designed substation that will support telecommunications company PLDT’s 11th and largest hyperscale data center facility in Laguna, Philippines.
This is part of Meralco and PLDT’s hyperscale collaboration,. The new substation will be designed to provide reliable and high-quality electricity service to the data center once it starts operations
Though the plans are still up for approval from the Energy Regulatory Commission, Meralco Senior VP and Head of Networks Ronnie Aperocho said that they are planning to complete the project in June 2023.
Moreover, since the substation is expected to be a power-intensive facility, Meralco president and CEO Ray Espinosa added that they are fully committed to “PLDT’s thrust to utilize renewable energy (RE) and energy efficient technologies” and has therefore agreed to make the center sustainable.
This substation design will also provide resilient and flexible power to the data center, ensuring service continuity that goes beyond the standard requirements of the TIA-942 Rated 3 coverage.
