Northern Trust launches U.S. ETF servicing platform

CHICAGO, UNITED STATES — Northern Trust has launched a United States exchange-traded fund (ETF) servicing platform, naming Harding Loevner as its inaugural client to support the launch of the International Developed Markets Select Equity ETF, the company announced in a report from Street Insider.
Northern Trust integrates ETF and mutual fund servicing
The platform brings together custody, fund accounting, fund administration, transfer agency services, basket creation, order-taking, and authorized participant (AP) servicing under a single provider.
Northern Trust has served Harding Loevner (hardingloevner.com) for more than 15 years across fund administration and custody globally, and the LOEV appointment extends that relationship into the U.S. ETF market.
“ETFs continue to benefit from powerful structural tailwinds that are driving broader investor adoption and sustained industry growth, and our clients are increasingly looking for a single, strategic partner to deliver services across both mutual funds and ETFs as those worlds converge. This new capability is a natural extension of the full suite of asset servicing solutions Northern Trust provides to asset managers and positions us to help clients advance their evolving product strategies,” said Ryan Burns, Head of Global Fund Services, Americas at Northern Trust Asset Servicing.
“We built our U.S. ETF servicing platform with the evolving needs of asset managers in mind, combining operational excellence, scalable technology, and a client-centric service model designed to help clients succeed in a rapidly growing and increasingly sophisticated ETF marketplace,” said Phil Nanof, Head of ETF Services, Americas at Northern Trust Asset Servicing.
ETF servicing requires specialized capabilities compared with traditional mutual funds, including creation and redemption basket processing, authorized participant connectivity, and intraday portfolio operations.
“Launching our first U.S. ETF is an important milestone for Harding Loevner and reflects our commitment to giving clients more ways to access our investment capabilities,” said Aaron Bellish, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Harding Loevner.
The launch reflects a broader shift among asset managers toward consolidated fund servicing, as managers seek fewer provider relationships and greater operational continuity across product types.
For the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector, growth in the ETF market is expanding demand for specialized fund operations services that asset managers prefer to outsource to established providers.
Northern Trust’s platform positions it to capture new mandates from asset managers entering the ETF space for the first time, a segment where operational complexity has historically driven outsourced fund administration to specialized providers.
