PH drops one spot in global democracy index

The Philippines slipped one place to 55th in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) democracy index for 2020. The country ranked 53rd in 2018 and 54th last year.
In its report, the EIU said there’s “significant weakness in other aspects of democracy, including problems in governance, an underdeveloped political culture and low levels of political participation” in the country. The Philippines received a score of 6.56.
The report also categorized the Philippines as among those countries “with flawed democracies” or those that “have free and fair elections, even if there are problems (such as infringements on media freedom), basic civil liberties are respected.”
