Portugal is top relocation choice for American workers
CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — The global workforce is witnessing a significant shift as more American workers are opting to work for international companies.
According to the State of Global Hiring Report by HR platform Deel, the number of American workers hired by international companies grew 62% last year.
Deel analyzed 300,000 contracts between its customers and workers, with 85% of these contracts being for remote positions. However, some are choosing to make the move abroad.
Portugal was the top destination for American visa applicants on Deel in 2023, with its golden visa driving interest.
Spain, United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates were also popular options, especially Dubai, which along with the Spanish cities of Malaga, Alicante and Valencia, ranked highest for expat life satisfaction according to Internations.
The top seven countries that American workers are considering for their move abroad, based on visa requests through Deel’s immigration and visa support feature, are as follows:
Deel CEO Alex Bouaziz attributed this global hiring trend to the normalization of remote work during the pandemic, which has prompted workers to reconsider their priorities. “Now that people are able to get some of the best jobs remotely and can live anywhere, where are the most appealing places for remote workers?” he said.
Meanwhile, workplace author Julia Hobsbawm predicts that 2024 will see the rise of the “flexeteriat,” a new class of worker who values flexibility and freedom of choice above all else when it comes to how and where they work.
