Robredo plans to decentralize BPO, telco sectors

Vice President of the Philippines and presidential aspirant Leni Robredo is planning to incentivize the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and telecommunication industries to decentralize these sectors and promote remote work to Filipinos.
In an online town hall meeting with BPO and IT professionals, Robredo said that if she wins the presidency, she will incentivize telcos to improve internet speed outside Metro Manila and advocate for flexible work arrangements in the BPO industry.
She stated that the remote and hybrid work models improve the quality of life of employees, citing that the government and private sector should now have new policies and restrictions in place to adapt to the new normal.
However, various “outdated” regulatory restrictions are becoming a hindrance in this plan.
Robredo, a lawyer and an economist, wants to amend laws that restrict telcos from freely building towers in the countryside.
This move could make internet connection stable outside the country’s key cities, leading new BPO firms to expand and open more jobs in the provinces.
