South Africa’s gaming industry to reach $34.9Mn by 2029: HP study

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA — South Africa’s gaming industry, home to 26.5 million gamers, is experiencing a remarkable surge, with eSports spending expected to reach US$26.4 million (approximately ZAR473 million) this year.

This growth is projected to continue, reaching US$34.9 million (over ZAR500 million) by 2029, according to a study by HP. Despite this burgeoning interest, many South African gaming enthusiasts remain unaware of the training and job opportunities available in this sector.

Gaming as a career pathway in South Africa

The HP study, which surveyed 2,563 respondents in South Africa, highlights gaming and eSports as powerful yet underutilized pathways for combating youth unemployment and fostering digital innovation.

Yesh Surjoodeen, Managing Director of HP Southern and Central Africa, stated that “what is resoundingly clear from the report is that there is strong interest in SA’s gaming and eSports industry and careers within it.”

Addressing the knowledge gap in gaming careers

However, a critical gap in the industry exists. While seven out of ten respondents expressed interest in gaming careers, 80% cited a lack of knowledge about educational initiatives as a major barrier.

This gap emphasized the need for increased awareness and access to educational programs that can prepare individuals for roles in gaming, media, and information and communication technologies (ICT) industries.

Economic opportunities in the gaming sector

The report revealed that entry-level salaries in the gaming industry range from ZAR10,000 to ZAR30,000 (US$550 to US$1,650) per month, aligning with the average South African salary of just under ZAR26,800 (US$$1,480) per month.

This presents gaming as an attractive career option compared to the national minimum wage of approximately ZAR5,000 (US$276) per month. Furthermore, with an average IT sector salary of ZAR840,000 (US$46,480) per year in South Africa, tech careers offer lucrative opportunities.

HP emphasized the urgent need to close the information gap around gaming industry opportunities and expand access to relevant programs. The high cost of educational programs was identified as a significant barrier by respondents. Thus, gaming courses are crucial for providing access to the necessary education and skills.

HP’s role in promoting digital equity

To address these challenges, HP is collaborating with educational institutions and government agencies across the region. The HP Gaming Garage eSports Management and Gaming Development Academy, launched globally in 2021, aims to prepare students for professions in the industry as part of HP’s commitment to accelerate digital equity for 150 million people by 2030.

Mayank Dhingra, Senior Education Business Leader at HP, noted that “HP’s report showcases the appetite of South Africans for accessible streams of education in this space.” The initiative helps students connect directly with game development and eSports industry experts through workshops and internship placements.

By adapting learning materials to meet rising youth interest, formal institutions have a unique opportunity to tap into this underexplored sector with significant potential to elevate the broader African gaming and eSports industry.
