Sri Lanka spotlights IT/BPM industry at London Event

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA — The High Commission of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka-UK Chamber of Commerce (SL-UKCC), and outsourcing provider Infomate recently showcased Sri Lanka’s prowess in Business Process Management (BPM) at a promotional event in London, dubbed the “Island of Ingenuity.”
High Commissioner Saroja Sirisena highlighted Sri Lanka’s growing, highly skilled IT/BPM workforce, attributing their competitiveness to the government’s free education programs in English and IT.
She also noted that the IT/BPM industry is key to the country’s economic recovery.
Meanwhile, SL-UKCC Director Eranga Pathirage provided an overview of Sri Lanka’s IT sector. He claimed Sri Lanka is well-positioned to surpass its US$5 billion growth target by 2025 by capitalizing on key industry trends such as digital marketplaces, metaverses, AI apps, sustainability, and tech democratization.
At the same time, Infomate’s CEO Jehan Perinpanayagam emphasized Sri Lanka’s strategic advantage as a rising global BPO supplier due to its wide talent pool.
He also highlighted the country’s “Outsourcing Destination of the Year” awards in 2013, 2014, and 2019. Infomate also spearheads ‘Impact Sourcing’ in rural areas, creating jobs for disadvantaged women and youth.
Sri Lanka has been a longstanding BPO partner for the UK with many successful projects, including the London Stock Exchange and HSBC. With over 80,000 employees engaged in the BPO sector, the total sector revenue is estimated to be US$1.2 billion in exports.
