Workers turn to AI chatbots over employer support: report

PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES — A July 2026 survey of 2,000 United States employed adults found 42.6% have used an AI chatbot to manage work stress, compared with only 10.7% who used employer-provided mental health support, as 75.2% of workers concealed work-related distress from their employers in the past year.

Workers choose AI over employer mental health support 4 to 1

The Founder Reports workplace wellbeing survey stated workers “increasingly reach for AI before they’ll turn to anyone at their own company,” as the July 2026 survey of 2,000 United States employed adults found AI chatbot use for work stress climbs from 38.3% at lower stress levels to 52.9% among the most stressed workers.

The survey found 38.8% of respondents reported no employer mental health support at all, while 11.2% were unsure whether support existed, as only 10.8% of workers disclosed work-related distress to managers or human resources in the past year.

The 4-to-1 ratio of AI chatbot use versus employer mental health support reflects a supply gap: AI is available and employer support often is not.

Leaders outpace frontline staff in AI stress support use

The Founder Reports survey found leaders used AI chatbots for work-related stress at 50.2% compared with 39.3% among individual contributors, as AI chatbot comfort among the most stressed workers reached 28.9% against 9.2% for the least stressed.

Among the most stressed workers, 52.3% reported calling in sick with false reasons, compared with 38.8% across the full sample, indicating that concealment of distress extends from disclosure avoidance to attendance behavior.

Women reported weekly or daily work strain at 50.0% compared with 43.7% for men, as approximately 20% of the workforce carries daily distress with no formal support pathway in place.

The disclosure gap the survey documents connects directly to offshore outsourcing and business process outsourcing (BPO) capacity, where leading BPO operators managing distributed workforces face the same worker-to-AI shift the data documents.

When leaders are more likely than frontline staff to use AI for work distress and the most stressed workers bypass employer support entirely, the formal support infrastructure has already been bypassed at the organizational level.

The Founder Reports data confirms AI has become the default mental health resource for workers who cannot access or do not trust employer support.

For enterprise buyers managing offshore BPO workforces, AI tool availability does not substitute for visible employee assistance programs.

BPO operators that pair AI wellbeing tools with clearly communicated formal support are positioned to close the disclosure gap the survey documents.
