Nigeria won’t wait to sell its talent to the world: Tech4Dev founder

LAGOS, NIGERIA — Nigeria is moving to market its outsourcing talent to global clients now, ahead of full domestic structural readiness, with government-backed upskilling programs, a significant labor cost advantage, and an emerging national talent export policy forming the competitive proposition its technology training sector is taking to international buyers.

According to Joel Ogunsola, Founder and President of Tech4Dev, in an interview published by Arise TV, Nigeria is actively pursuing global talent export contracts under the Hire From Nigeria campaign and the National Talent Export Programme, with a formal Nigerian Outsourcing Policy under development.

Nigeria’s talent export agenda targets global BPO and tech demand

Nigeria’s business process outsourcing (BPO) and technology training sector is positioning national labor cost competitiveness as its primary export argument, with Ogunsola citing labor costs approximately three times lower than India and one and a half times lower than Kenya and South Africa.

The government has activated the Hire From Nigeria campaign and the National Talent Export Programme alongside a forthcoming Nigerian Outsourcing Policy to formalize the country’s services-export ambitions.

Demand-led training is the structural requirement Nigeria’s technology sector has identified as central to global market entry, with programs required to align to international buyer requirements rather than domestic supply-driven academic tracks.

“There’s a lot of work going on in parallel. But are we going to wait until when we are 100% to say to the world that we have the right talent and the right skill sets? I’d say no,” said Joel Ogunsola, Founder and President of Tech4Dev.

Government upskilling and cost positioning anchor the export argument

Nigeria’s government is investing in multiple parallel upskilling pathways, including technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programs, digital training academies, and the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative, building the supply base Ogunsola says is ready for international engagement now.

Nigeria’s labor cost structure, at roughly three times more competitive than India on a per-hour basis, is the offshoring cost argument the National Talent Export Programme is advancing to global buyers as the country positions itself against established Asian and African delivery markets.

Ogunsola dismissed skepticism about Nigeria’s readiness and cost positioning: “I disagree. The numbers prove that you can be competitive.”

For buyers and operators evaluating emerging market outsourcing capacity in Africa, Nigeria’s talent export push is at an early formalization stage, with the Nigerian Outsourcing Policy not yet enacted, but the labor cost differential and government upskilling investment signal a market building the structural conditions for sustained BPO delivery.

Tech4Dev’s argument that Nigeria need not wait for full readiness before engaging global buyers reflects an approach that other developing outsourcing markets from Ghana to Rwanda have also adopted, and buyers looking to diversify African delivery beyond South Africa will find Nigeria’s developing frameworks worth tracking.
