Youth urged to join Fiji’s BPO sector amid global expansion
SUVA, FIJI — Fiji’s business process outsourcing (BPO) industry is making significant strides globally, providing young Fijians with promising opportunities in a rapidly expanding sector.
Deputy Prime Minister and Communications Minister Manoa Kamikamica underscores the industry’s potential to diversify the economy and create substantial employment prospects.
Maintaining competitiveness amidst wage changes
Despite recent minimum wage adjustments, Fiji’s outsourcing sector remains competitive. This resilience is attributed to the country’s neutral English proficiency, skilled workforce, and strategic proximity to major economies such as Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
Eight new outsourcing companies have been established over the past two years, highlighting the sector’s rapid growth.
World-class training and international exposure
Kamikamica emphasizes the benefits of the outsourcing industry, which provides world-class training and international exposure. Many Fijians are now working for offshore companies while remaining based locally, gaining valuable skills and experience.
“This industry has great potential and has great benefit for our young men and women,” Kamikamica stated.
Empowering youth with career opportunities
The BPO industry offers young people, particularly those uncertain about their career paths, a chance to gain practical expertise in a dynamic global market.
The rapid expansion of Fiji’s BPO industry has attracted several global companies, including the UK-based Hertz, which has begun outsourcing services to Fiji.
Decentralization and regional development
A significant development within the sector is its outreach into rural areas, with companies establishing operations beyond traditional urban centers.
This decentralization has brought much-needed employment to regions such as Labasa and Savusavu, providing further potential for regional development.
Transitioning to high-value services
Beyond traditional BPO services, Fiji is now advancing towards knowledge process outsourcing (KPO), with local companies taking on high-value services such as artificial intelligence.
This shift not only enhances the industry’s offerings but also positions Fiji as a competitive player in the global outsourcing market.
A bright future for Fiji’s BPO industry
Fiji’s BPO industry is poised for continued growth, offering significant economic benefits and career opportunities for young Fijians. With ongoing investments and strategic developments, the sector is set to play a crucial role in the nation’s economic diversification and global engagement.
