Open Access pairs staff benefits sessions with livelihood training

Key facts
  • Open Access gave 35 employees a TESDA-accredited bread-making workshop
  • The July 24 session covered entrepreneurship, costing, and baking basics
  • Participants split into six teams judged by TESDA trainers
  • Open Access will make the workshop a regular EAP feature

MAKATI, PHILIPPINES — Open Access has folded income-generating skills training into the employee program it runs alongside government benefits sessions, with 27 staff completing the full run of sessions from May through July and the company saying part of the intent is to help them earn beyond their contact center jobs.

According to Open Access, the sessions sit within its Employee Assistance Program and will continue as a regular feature.

Benefits sessions and skills training in one program

The run began with a PhilHealth webinar on May 5 that drew 71 employees, followed by a Social Security System and Department of Social Welfare and Development information day on May 8 whose two sessions drew 34 and 52 staff. A Pag-IBIG Fund session on June 10 processed 32 Loyalty Card applications on the day, in what Open Access said was its seventh collaboration with the agency.

The July 24 bread-making workshop was the first session to carry an explicit earnings component. It took 35 employees from operations and support teams through basic entrepreneurship, costing and baking principles, with six teams producing and presenting bread that the trainers judged.

Emelda Perez, human resources director at Open Access, said the aim was for employees to see that learning a new skill “can open opportunities to learn and earn, whether through a small business, livelihood, or an additional source of income.” Perez said the sessions were also meant to let staff meet colleagues from other departments.

Training ran through a TESDA-accredited college

Open Access said the training was not a formal partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, but was delivered by St. Louise de Marillac College of Quezon City, a TESDA-accredited institution it invited to run the session.

The company said it holds no data on employees who have started a bread-making business since the workshop.

Kaith Eleunice Saludo, an information security and compliance officer who took part, said employees “can earn additional profit or income aside from their main work here in Open Access.”

For business process outsourcing (BPO) operators, the test of programs like this is whether they move anything measurable, whether attrition, internal mobility, or the number of staff who build a second income. Open Access does not track that yet. Whether a Philippine provider can show livelihood training affects retention is a question buyers assessing workforce stability will eventually put to top BPO companies worldwide.
