Unverified claim of 80 Indian layoffs on one call goes viral

- A Reddit post claims about 80 Indian customer-service workers were cut on one call.
- The workers reportedly supported an unnamed bank based in the United States.
- Influencer Sara Gonzales reshared the claim on X.
- The American Bazaar says the account is not independently confirmed.
MARYLAND, UNITED STATES — An unverified Reddit account of roughly 80 Indian customer-service workers losing their jobs during a single five-minute Google Meet call has fueled fresh debate over offshore job security, after influencer Sara Gonzales reshared it on X.
Reddit post describes a five-minute mass layoff
The employee, posting in the r/IndianWorkplace community, said the team at a bank based in the United States was first told to work from home that day for “operational reasons” before being asked to join a Google Meet with senior management at around 9:30 p.m., according to The American Bazaar.
The employee alleged the company cited performance and output as its reasons, but questioned why an entire team would be affected if individual performance was the issue.
The American Bazaar noted there is no independent confirmation of the number of employees affected, the identity of the bank, the circumstances of the terminations or the company’s stated reasoning.
“All 80 employees! All gone,” the employee wrote.
Viral reshare turns one post into debate
“Love that for us!” was the reaction of Gonzales, who amplified the Reddit post on X.
Her comment drew attention to the claim beyond the Reddit community, particularly because the post involved Indian workers losing jobs at a U.S.-based company.
The account has prompted wider discussion on Reddit about the security of customer-service jobs, the role of outsourcing and how multinational companies handle mass layoffs involving overseas teams, the publication reported.
The American Bazaar said the post raises questions about what happened to the alleged 80 workers but does not by itself establish that the layoffs occurred as described.
For offshore outsourcing teams, the episode shows how quickly a single unverified account can shape perceptions of job security across business process outsourcing (BPO) and customer-service work. When decisions about overseas teams are made far from where staff work, buyers comparing the top BPO companies worldwide can ask how a provider handles and communicates workforce changes.
The American Bazaar’s reporting confirms only that the claim spread widely, not that the layoffs happened as described.
For enterprise buyers with offshore customer-service teams, how workforce reductions are handled and explained is part of the reputational risk of outsourcing.
Offshore BPO operations with documented, transparent restructuring processes are positioned to answer those questions before a viral post does.
