MANILA, PHILIPPINES — More than 30 Open Access employee volunteers planted 480 native saplings at the University of the Philippines (UP) Laguna-Quezon Land Grant in Siniloan, Laguna, in the second year of the company’s tree-planting program.
The company says it planted 300 saplings across its Manila and Davao sites in 2025, 200 of them in Manila, and that this year’s drive went beyond its Board of Investments (BOI)-accredited target of 100 forest trees.
A second year at the Sierra Madre
Volunteers from Open Access Manila planted the saplings at the foot of the Sierra Madre mountain range, the company said in a blog post on Oct. 12. The species included bagtikan, daligdigan, dulitan, malaruhat-puti and mayapis, Open Access told Outsource Accelerator.
Open Access, part of the Singapore-based TDCX group, runs the drive as its annual corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, Plant It Forward.
“This is our second consecutive year, and we are making it an annual tradition,” said Joy Sebastian, vice president.
“Last year was about starting a commitment; this year is about strengthening it,” said Lubert Alvaran, employee engagement manager.
Why the range matters
Save Sierra Madre Day falls on Sept. 26 under Proclamation No. 413, signed in June 2012, which attributes the flooding from Typhoon Ondoy in 2009 to deforestation of the range.
“Deforested watersheds lose their capacity to retain water. This results in compacted topsoil, surface runoff, soil erosion, silting, and severe lowland flooding,” said Rey Lorida, director of the UP Laguna-Quezon Land Grant.
Volunteers planted beneath established nurse trees, guided by foresters from the nonprofit Fostering Education & Environment for Development (FEED).
What it says to clients
“It reflects who we are as a company and why being rooted in purpose, people, and values makes Open Access a company of choice for global clients and top talent,” said Ray Ermita, client solutions director.
In September, Open Access paired staff benefits sessions with livelihood training.
