Data Science Engineers In High Demand

Demand for data science engineers in the Philippines is growing, but Filipino engineers need to learn more about artificial intelligence as the next step in the outsourcing sector, a Silicon Valley-based AI firm said. Rufino Olay III, vice president of AI Center of Excellence at Wave Computing, said the demand for data science engineers in the country has increased to more than 1,000, up from just 600 in April this year, as foreign outsourcing firms are looking to hire data science engineers in the country.
Olay noted that there are around 100,000 Filipinos in the country with data science, math and engineering qualifications listed on their résumés, but the current pool of skilled data scientists in the Philippines only consists of academics and Filipinos who work at banks in the US, Singapore and Hong Kong, and those with experience in Silicon Valley, New York and Wall Street. However, there are not enough of them, and Olay stressed the need for engineers to undergo further training, urging them to enroll in Wave Computing’s programs so the Philippines can become a player in the AI field.
