BPO companies hold off on-boarding due to pandemic
Information technology and business process outsourcing (BPO) companies in India have either stopped hiring or are deferring hires as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Cognizant alone, more than 100 laterals who were recruited had their starting date deferred, causing uncertainty and financial burdens.
According to Pavanjit Mane, president of the Forum of IT Employees (FITE), there could be thousands of employees impacted across companies. FITE is also planning to take up the issue of lateral hires with the labour commissioner in Pune, India.
After the virus outbreak, most IT companies have stopped hiring for a few essential roles. During the Q4 results, IT majors such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro and HCL Tech said that they would not be hiring laterals for the rest of the year. However, they assured that the job offers already given would be honored.
