Elon Musk to build new AI company
NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is reportedly increasing his artificial intelligence (AI) efforts by creating a new company called X.AI.
According to a New York Times article, Musk has hired top AI researchers from Google’s DeepMind and is in talks with Professor Jimmy Ba to help build the new firm.
The entrepreneur spoke publicly about creating a rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT that generates politically charged material without restrictions.
Musk’s AI approach reportedly boils down to doing it himself and offering better, safer alternatives than his competitors.
His contradictory views on AI stem from his belief that it will ultimately benefit and destroy humanity. As a result, Musk recently jump-started his AI projects while signing an open letter calling for a six-month pause on AI development because of its “profound risks to society.”
The billionaire helped found OpenAI in 2015 as a non-profit organization but resigned from its board in 2018 due to a growing conflict of interest.
