OpenAI calls for global AI oversight body

CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — ChatGPT pioneer OpenAI urges various government organizations to establish an international artificial intelligence (AI) oversight body.
In a blog post, three of OpeanAI’s top executives — CEO Sam Altman, President Greg Brockman, and Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever — emphasized the need for regulation and oversight to manage the development of “superintelligent” AI systems, which they believe pose an “existential risk” to humanity.
The proposed global organization would oversee the pace of AI development and encourage AI companies to share knowledge and best practices for ensuring the safety and alignment of AI systems with human interests.
This call for regulation echoed Altman’s recent testimony before a Senate subcommittee, where he urged the United States (U.S.) government to regulate the AI industry, including OpenAI.
The blog post suggested that any AI effort above a certain capability threshold should be subject to international authority, allowing inspection, audits, compliance testing, and deployment restrictions.
While there is disagreement among experts regarding the long-term implications of superintelligent AI systems, concerns persist about their potential to deceive or harm humans.
It is especially highlighted after a fake AI-generated image depicting an explosion at the Pentagon spread rapidly on social media. This event is a stark reminder of the potential misuse of generative AI in spreading disinformation during upcoming elections.
U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration is currently preparing a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy to assess the positive effects and risks associated with the technology.
