Addt’l ecozones to be built in Mindanao

The development of additional economic zones in 18 areas in Mindanao is currently in the works, said Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA).
In a briefing, PEZA Director General Charito B. Plaza said these new ecozones will prioritize the agriculture, agroforestry, bio-energy, and fishing sectors.
Plaza stated that the proposed zones will happen in areas “rich in agriculture, aquaculture [and] agroforestry” such as Bukidnon, Agusan del Norte, Davao City, Sulu, and Sultan Kudarat, among others.
The Director-General added that they plan to develop special areas dedicated to halal food production, boosting our country’s bid for the global halal market that is estimated to be at US$3 trillion.
As of February, there are 37 ecozones located in Mindanao, with 15 operating as IT parks.
