Baguio City Council backs 6 bills upgrading BPO safeguards
The Baguio City Council is backing a range of measures seeking to protect business process outsourcing (BPO) workers. Councilor Art Allad-iw penned a resolution backing House Bills 156, 661, 662, 2233, 4629, and 5728. Allad-iw said the six proposed measures seek to upgrade working conditions in the BPO industry, and to safeguard BPO workers’ welfare and interests. He said in Baguio some BPO workers’ rights on security of tenure, and other labor rights, were allegedly being trampled upon. A debacle last year between Sitel Philippines Baguio and disgruntled workers brought the plight of workers into the spotlight. He recommended urgent action to pass national legislation that will protect the rights and welfare of BPO workers. Baguio has at least 13,000 BPO workers.
