Gridiron backs life-sciences back-office firm

CONNECTICUT, UNITED STATES — Gridiron Capital announced a strategic investment in van den Boom and Associates, a San Diego-based provider of outsourced back-office services to life sciences companies.
The firm, known as vdB&A, serves more than 160 clients through 150 professionals across offices in the United States and the Philippines.
Gridiron targets the life sciences back-office market
Gridiron Capital is a New Canaan, Connecticut-based investment firm specializing in middle-market business services, consumer products, and industrial growth companies across the United States and Canada.
vdB&A was founded in 2014 by Esther van den Boom and provides life sciences companies with outsourced finance and accounting, human resources (HR), and information technology (IT) managed services, along with contract management, Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) compliance, and technical accounting.
“vdB&A solves a real problem for companies whose success depends on staying focused on the science,” said Scott Harrison, managing partner and chief operating officer at Gridiron Capital.
vdB&A expands its offerings with Gridiron’s backing
Gridiron’s investment will support vdB&A’s growth through Centers of Excellence, technology enablement, and organizational development, extending the firm’s reach into new life sciences subsectors while maintaining service quality for its existing client base.
vdB&A operates across five offices in San Diego, Boston, Jacksonville, Minneapolis, and Manila in the Philippines, giving pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device clients access to a broader set of outsourced back-office capabilities through the Gridiron partnership.
“We found a partner that will enable us to continue being best in class, while expanding our offerings,” said Esther van den Boom, founder at vdB&A.
The investment reflects a growing private equity appetite for outsourced back-office services in the life sciences sector, where pharmaceutical and biotech companies increasingly prefer to outsource finance, HR, and compliance functions to specialized firms rather than build in-house capabilities.
Aaron Stoppelmann, a principal at Gridiron Capital, said vdB&A’s consistent client retention reflects the strength of its market position in life sciences business process outsourcing (BPO), a niche that benefits from the sector’s high compliance standards and regulatory requirements.
vdB&A’s Philippines office also positions the firm within the broader offshore professional services market, where life sciences companies are increasingly offshoring accounting, HR, and IT support to reduce costs without sacrificing the compliance oversight their regulated industry demands.
