Health systems turn to vendors for IT in 2026

ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES — UnityPoint Health, Trinity Health, PeaceHealth, and Rochester Regional Health all outsourced information technology and revenue cycle functions in 2026, as financial pressure and the accelerating complexity of healthcare IT pushed these United States systems toward external partnerships.

UnityPoint Health cuts 207 IT jobs

UnityPoint Health announced in April 2026 that it will eliminate 207 information technology (IT) positions, shifting IT functions to Accenture and revenue cycle operations to Omega Healthcare, according to Becker’s Hospital Review.

Terminations were scheduled for July 24, 2026. Drivers cited include rising labor, drug, and supply costs alongside insurance reimbursement reductions. Scott Kizer, president and chief executive officer of UnityPoint Health, said the decision reflects a systemwide strain familiar across the industry.

“Like many health systems across the country, we are navigating a period of sustained financial pressure that requires us to make difficult but necessary decisions,” Kizer said.

UnityPoint Health’s outsourcing arrangement with Accenture and Omega Healthcare eliminates 207 IT roles — one of the largest single-system IT workforce reductions tied to vendor transitions in 2026.

Trinity, PeaceHealth, Rochester exit IT functions

Trinity Health, a 90-plus-hospital Catholic system based in Livonia, Michigan, is outsourcing its IT service desk and applications support to an as-yet-unnamed partner. The transition will roll out in phases through the end of 2026, with affected employees offered transition support and the chance to apply for roles with the incoming vendor.

Trinity Health cited the accelerating pace and complexity of healthcare technology alongside broader reimbursement pressure as the primary drivers.

PeaceHealth, a Pacific Northwest system, is transferring IT operations including service desk, infrastructure, and applications to Tech Mahindra and its U.S. healthcare subsidiary, with role eliminations expected by November 2026.

Rochester Regional Health separately outsourced coding and billing functions at two upstate New York hospitals in April, affecting 22 union members as part of what the system called a “targeted operational change to reduce duplication and align administrative functions systemwide.”

Across all four systems, no direct patient-care positions were affected by the outsourcing decisions.

As health systems look to stabilize finances without cutting clinical capacity, many are moving non-clinical functions to specialized vendors. Revenue cycle management (RCM), coding, and IT service desk are the functions most consistently transferred first, because they operate on standardized processes that third-party providers can absorb at scale.

Health system leaders evaluating similar strategies can review options among top healthcare outsourcing companies in the U.S., where business process outsourcing (BPO) of IT and administrative functions has become a defined and repeatable playbook for systems navigating reimbursement pressure.
