CALIFORNIA and MINNESOTA, UNITED STATES — Velosity, a Minnesota-based medical device contract manufacturer, has acquired Lucid Labs to create an integrated medtech platform spanning product design, engineering, and precision manufacturing.

The deal adds more than 20 design and development engineers to Velosity’s operations and brings Tim Hillukka, Lucid Labs founder and chief executive officer (CEO), into Velosity as chief innovation officer.

Bringing design expertise inside Velosity’s manufacturing platform

Lucid Labs, also based in Minnesota, specializes in product design and development for medical device companies, offering expertise in design for manufacturing that complements Velosity’s precision machining and molding operations.

According to a report from PlasticsToday, the acquisition expands the Velosity Engineering, Launch and Optimization Lab by adding more than 20 design and development engineers, deepening the firm’s front-end capability.

Velosity said the combination would help medical device customers reduce development timelines and accelerate programs from prototype to commercial production.

The combined organization will serve medical device customers from early-stage design through validation, precision manufacturing, and commercial launch, eliminating the design-to-manufacturing handoff that typically delays development timelines.

Velosity, a portfolio company of Graham Partners, said the acquisition creates a vertically integrated managed services offering that spans concept, prototype, validation, and production under one delivery model.

By positioning product design expertise alongside precision manufacturing, the combined team aims to shorten development cycles and improve launch predictability for medical device clients.

Velosity’s deal mirrors a broader shift in contract manufacturing, where full-cycle outsourcing from concept to production is replacing fragmented vendor models in medical device development.

Integrated design-to-manufacturing providers can shorten time to market substantially, a priority that has intensified as device firms face compressed development cycles and evolving regulatory requirements.

Among the top outsourcing companies supporting medtech innovation, spanning engineering and manufacturing is an increasingly valued differentiator.

For businesses evaluating medical device contract manufacturers in the United States, Velosity’s expanded platform now offers integrated delivery across design, validation, and production.
