Illegal foreign workers arrested in call center raid

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) last week raided a business process outsourcing office in Biñan, Laguna, and arrested 106 foreigners found to be working there illegally, including 97 Chinese nationals and one minor, a 17-year-old girl. Dana Sandoval, a BI spokesperson, said that aside from the Chinese nationals, four Indonesians, three Malaysians, one Vietnamese and one Laotian had also been arrested. Sandoval said the foreigners were arrested for violating the conditions of their stay and for failing to present the proper visas or permits to work in the country legally.
The spokesperson said the 105 undocumented foreigners will be deported, while the minor will be turned over to her guardians and may be asked to leave the country if found to be involved in illegal work.
BI commissioner Jaime Morente has urged undocumented foreigners to legalize their stay in the country or face sanctions, and the public to report to the BI the presence of illegal aliens in their community. Last week’s arrests were made following complaints from the community.
