PH told to stop Chinese “job invasion”

A former trade official in the Philippines is calling on the government to stop granting work permits to Chinese nationals who are coming to the country for employment. These foreign workers have come in large numbers, hoping to secure jobs in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry. Former trade secretary Mar Roxas said he has nothing against Chinese coming over to work as language experts for BPO companies. However, he pointed out that the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) should ensure that Filipinos still get the skilled and manual jobs such as carpentry, masonry, welding, and the like. It has been observed, he said, that some Chinese have been getting hired for such jobs. According to reports, the DOLE issued 119,000 Alien Employment Permits last year, with nearly half granted to Chinese workers.
