Samar’s Borongan City targeted for new ICT park

Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, vice president of the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines (NICP), said that Borongan City in Samar has the potential to set up an ICT park. Batapa-Sigue made the announcement during her visit in the city for the establishment of the Borongan Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Council recently. She said the main push of the ICT is to create more jobs in the countryside and alleviate the heavily congested cities of Manila, Cebu and Davao. Batapa-Sigue also outlined how the ICT has boosted employment and the local economy of Bacolod City, where she is Chairwoman of the Bacolod-Negros Occidental Federation for Information and Communications Technology (BNEFIT). The 2017 JobStreet.com Bacolod Job Trends Report showed that the BPO sector employs 40 percent of the total workers among the Top 10 industries in Bacolod. She said that with the setting up of the ICT office in Borongan, there is potential for animation and game development, contact centers and BPO operations, global in-house centers, health information management, and information technology and software development.
